Academics

Dr. Frates started teaching at Harvard Medical School in 1999 during her last year of residency when she had an elective rotation. She sought out the opportunity to teach in the core curriculum as a tutorial leader for the human central nervous system. The experience allowed Dr. Frates to grow as an educator, as she learned the skills necessary to lead and facilitate discussions. The tutorial sessions were less about lecturing and more about empowering the students to discover the answers to complex questions while working together as a group. Dr. Frates continued to teach the central nervous system and was asked to teach in the nutrition course, musculoskeletal course, as well as the endocrine course. Each year she was a tutorial leader, Dr. Frates won an Excellence in Tutorial Facilitation award as a result of the solid 5/5 rankings she received from her students.

In 2015, Dr. Frates created a 14-week long introduction to Lifestyle Medicine course for Harvard Extension School. The course covered all the major topics of Lifestyle Medicine including its history, exercise, diet, sleep, stress resiliency, social connections, addictions, behavior change, positive psychology, mindfulness, meditation, and medical education. Dr. Frates won an award for Excellence in Teaching from the Harvard Extension School. Over 100 students enrolled in the class and it is one of the most popular classes at the Extension School.
